A Level Environmental Science Teacher Training Day

Introduction
Teaching Environmental Science at A Level has many challenges, including the breadth of scientific knowledge required, the practical skills, the extended writing element and the high demand for mathematical application. This course aims to help teachers address some of these challenges in the classroom to improve the outcomes for their students.

The day will include an exam feedback and Q&A session from the exam board AQA, ideas for supporting students with extended writing and top tips for assessment and sharing examples of PAGs. There will be opportunities throughout the day to share best practice and resources.

Content will include

•        AQA update, feedback from the Summer Exam, Q&A
•        Practical skills
•        Top tips for teaching extended writing to improve student outcome
•        Update on environmental science research – with some real data sets

Tea, coffee, and a sandwich lunch will be provided.

Damian Gant is Subject Lead for Science in the Subject Support team at AQA.  With over 20 years teaching experience before he joined AQA, he worked across a wide variety of schools delivering support, school improvement and training. Damian has also worked as a Science Consultant as part of the Secondary National Strategy. He has extensive leadership experience through these diverse roles in Merseyside and Lancashire schools and holds an NPQH. He is enthusiastic in making science accessible to all students and has an interest in the development of skills alongside subject knowledge. He enjoys any science practical which engages and develops students’ knowledge, skills and understanding and promotes a love of science.

Dr Rowena Fletcher-Wood is a freelance science communicator and tutor. She has been teaching since 2007 and is the Head of Science at Greene's Tutorial College, where she manages the provision of the A Level Practical Endorsement for sciences. Previously a Lecturer in Environmental Science at Reading University, she has recently begun teaching Environmental Science AQA A Level. She is been a committee member of the Environmental Chemistry Group of the ÍâÍøÌìÌà since 2013, organising flagship scientific events, outreach, and managing the editorial process for the group's biannual Bulletin.
