Prepare for Dr. Stephen Belding to show you a fast-paced journey through the extraordinary world of explosives, where dramatic history meets the very newest frontiers of chemistry. This lecture explores how explosive reactions have shaped civilisation, inspired scientists, and pushed chemistry to its limits. From the colossal volcanic reuption responsible for the largest explosion every recorded on Earth, to the controlled brilliance behind some of the most famous historical discovereies, we will uncover how energetic materials work, why they are so powerful and how chemists study them safely today.

With spectacular live demonstrations, Dr. Belding brings the science to life - you'll experience the reactions that gave chemistry its reputation for excitement and wonder. The talk concludes at the cutting edge of current research, including what may be the most explosive molecule ever created. Combining breathtaking science, real discovery and unforgettable visuals, this is a rare opportunity to witness the raw power, danger and beauty of chemistry at its most thrilling!

And if that isn't exciting enough, after the lecture we'll also be hosting a chemistry/science themed family board game afternoon, with a large selection of science-themed games and some familiar favourites like UNO. We'll have plenty of board game loving volunteers on hand, so do feel free to stay and chat to Dr. Belding, or enjoy some refreshments and play some smart (and sometimes quite sily) board games.

Dr. Stephen Belding is Director of Academic Programmes for Rugby School Global Partnerships, and former Head of Chemistry at Rugby School. He holds an MChem and DPhil in Chemistry from Oxford University, as well as a Masters in Education from the University of Buckingham, where his research explored school inspection reports and the drivers of excellence in schools. He also serves as the governor responsible for reaching and learning at Ashlawn School in Rugby, sits on the Science Council of ISEB and works as an A-Level examiner.
