Atsushi Wakamiya
Kyoto University

Biography
Prof. Dr. Atsushi Wakamiya is a Professor at Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University. He obtained his PhD from Kyoto University in 2003. He began his academic career at Nagoya University as an Assistant Professor in 2003. In 2010, he returned to Kyoto University as an Associate Professor and was promoted to a Professor in 2018. He also works as a Deputy Executive Vice-President and Deputy Provost of Kyoto University. His research background is physical organic chemistry and materials science.
His current research focuses on the development of optoelectronic and photovoltaic materials based on understanding the correlation between structure and properties. Prof. Wakamiya has pioneered research on purified precursor materials of metal halide perovskite semiconductors, charge-collecting materials, and interface modification of perovskite layers with dipole strategy, enabling the reproducible fabrication of high-performance perovskite solar cells.
Prof. Wakamiya has published over 230 papers and 60 patents in the field of organic and perovskite optoelectronics. He is a Co-Founder and Chief Advisor (Science & Technology) of EneCoat Technologies, Co. Ltd., a Kyoto University's startup company (Founded in 2018) manufacturing perovskite solar modules. He is a Fellow of the ÍâÍøÌìÌÃ. He has received many awards, including:
- Nozoe Memorial Award for Young Organic Chemists in 2015
- Innovative PV Award (2016), KCS Award in Chemical Technology (2018)
- Yoshida Prize Symposium Distinguished Lecturer (2019)
- Green and Sustainable Chemistry Award (GSC Award) by MEXT Japan (2020)
- Ichimura Prize in Science against Global Warming for Distinguished Achievement (2021)
- Chemical Society of Japan Award for Creative Work (2020)
- Commendation for Science and Technology by MEXT Japan: Award for Science and Technology Research Category (2022)
- Hamakawa Award (2024) etc.
