Xueji Zhang

Biography
Dr Xueji Zhang is Vice President and Vice Chairman of the University Council at Shenzhen University, where he also holds the position of University Distinguished Professor—the highest academic rank—within the School of Biomedical Engineering. He additionally serves as President of the Shenzhen Institute of Healthcare Security. Beyond Shenzhen University, Dr. Zhang is a Professor at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) and Executive President of the National Institute of Precision Medicine and Health in Beijing.
Dr Zhang received his BSc and PhD degrees from Wuhan University in 1989 and 1994, respectively. He completed postdoctoral research between 1995 and 1999 at the National Institute of Chemistry in Slovenia, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), and New Mexico State University in the United States. Prior to returning to academia, he held positions at World Precision Instruments, Inc. (USA), where he progressed from Research Scientist to Senior Vice President. In 2010, he joined USTB as a National Chair Professor.
His interdisciplinary research spans chemistry, biology, materials science, and medicine, with a primary focus on biosensing, biomedicine, and biomaterials. His laboratory is internationally recognized for the development of intelligent, wearable, and next-generation biosensors, as well as analytical tools and devices for investigating free radicals, cancer biomarkers, and disease-related physiological changes. This work underpins the advancement of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. His research interests also extend to drug delivery systems, new energy technologies, and natural medicines.
Dr Zhang is Editor-in-Chief of RSC Sensors & Diagnostics and The American Journal of Biomedical Sciences, and serves on the editorial boards of 25 international journals. His professional distinctions include election as a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Engineering, Fellowship of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the ÍâÍøÌìÌÃ, and designation as a Distinguished Fellow of the International Technology and Engineering Institute.

Internationally recognized as a leading scientist, Dr Zhang has been listed among the world’s top researchers by Stanford University from 2019 to 2025. In 2025, ScholarGPS ranked him in the top 0.05% of scientists worldwide, placing him fifth in Biomedical Engineering and seventh in Biosensors.
Dr Zhang’s scholarly and translational impact includes more than 200 granted patents, over 800 peer-reviewed journal publications with approximately 60,000 citations and an h-index of 120, nine books, and more than 300 keynote and invited lectures at national and international conferences. His work effectively bridges academia, industry, and public policy, resulting in over 40 technology licenses, the incubation of 17 high-technology companies, and significant contributions to governmental regulatory frameworks.
